Solar carports are a modern and sustainable solution that combines vehicle protection with renewable energy production. The process of installing these systems requires precise planning and implementation at several key stages. Below is an overview of the main steps that lead to the successful completion of a solar carport project.

1. Feasibility study and documentation

The first step is a thorough analysis of the site where the solar carport is to be built. This process includes:

  • Identification of a suitable site.
  • Conducting legal, technical, and environmental studies.
  • Preparation of construction plans, single pole diagrams (SLD), wiring plans, and other necessary documents.

This phase ensures the optimal technical solution and obtaining the necessary permits.

Example: The Greenbuddies project in Saint-Ghislain, Belgium, involved the installation of a 1 MWp solar carport with 2148 solar modules and a 'T' structure.

2. Foundations and soil preparation

The next step is to prepare the foundations and earthworks that will ensure the stability of the entire structure:

  • Digging trenches for electrical connections and preparing the ground for construction.
  • Installation of earth screws and footings. Surface concreting around the bolts.

Example: In Oberhausen, Germany, Greenbuddies installed a unique pilot project for a solar carport with a "T" design that was completed in just two days.

3. Installation of the supporting structure

Once the foundations are complete, the main structure of the carport is assembled:

  • The struts are installed in a "Y" or "T" shape according to the project requirements. The structure can be orientated north or south for maximum energy efficiency.
  • The beams are precisely fixed to provide sufficient support for the solar panels.

Example: In Lannach, Austria, Greenbuddies recently completed a project with an installed capacity of 3.355 MWp, providing 950 parking spaces and 120 EV chargers. This project is currently the largest solar carport in Austria.

4. Installation of panels and water drainage

After the construction is completed, the solar panels are installed:

  • The panels can be installed on the trapezoidal sheet or bifacial panels directly on the structure.
  • This phase also includes the implementation of a drainage system to protect the carport from long-term water damage.

Example: In Lutzmannsburg, Austria, Greenbuddies has built a 1.5 MWp solar parking lot. The project includes 454 parking spaces and was the largest carport in Austria at the time of installation.

5. Electrical work and lighting

The following work is being carried out to ensure the functionality of the solar system:

  • Installation of wiring, inverters, and connection to the power grid.
  • Installation of lighting, which often uses directly generated solar energy.

Example: On the solar car park project in Lutzmannsburg, Austria, Greenbuddies also installed a special drainage solution and efficient lighting that stands out especially at night.

6. Final works

The last step is the final check and handover of the project to the client:

  • Cleaning of the site and removal of all leftover materials.
  • Checking the system for proper functionality and commissioning.

Example: In a project in Kortrijk, Belgium, Greenbuddies implemented a 1.02 MWp solar carport covering an area of 6,100 m². This project ensures efficient use of space and sustainable energy production on the grounds of the local hospital.
