Even a small country can hold great potential for solar energy—limited land area is no longer a barrier to building PV systems. A great example is the construction of two new ground-mounted solar power plants in Luxembourg, developed by the Greenbuddies team. With a total area of 2,586 km², Luxembourg is one of the smallest EU member states—roughly the size of five Prague cities.

Now, the country is set to welcome its very first ground-mounted photovoltaic power plants. The project, delivered by Greenbuddies, includes two installations with a total capacity of 7.19 MWp, located in Kaffishaff (3.706 MWp) and Fréiseng (3.639 MWp). The investor behind the project is the German energy company wpd GmbH.

Tracker-based solar plants in Luxembourg

Both plants are built using modern tracker systems that follow the sun throughout the day, generating up to 30% more energy than conventional fixed-tilt systems. In a country as small as Luxembourg, this is an ideal solution to maximize energy yield from limited space.

Greenbuddies as EPC provider

Greenbuddies is delivering the project as a full turnkey EPC provider, covering everything from project design and procurement to construction, installation, and grid connection at the low-voltage level. This EPC (engineering, procurement, construction) approach has become a core part of Greenbuddies’ operations across many European markets.
This isn’t Greenbuddies’ first project in Luxembourg. In 2023, the company installed a 0.8 MWp rooftop PV system on a shopping center, using a lightweight structure suitable for roofs with limited load capacity.

Luxembourg’s solar energy future

Luxembourg aims to achieve a 37% share of renewable energy in its total energy consumption by 2030. In the solar sector alone, the country has set a target of 1.1 GW of installed capacity. To support this ambition, a 2024 study assessed the solar potential along the nation’s highways, delivering promising results and paving the way for further developments.

Through this latest project, Greenbuddies not only expands its footprint in Luxembourg but also contributes to the diversification of the country's energy mix. The company continues to prove itself a reliable EPC partner in Europe’s energy transition. With broad experience in diverse markets such as the Netherlands, Germany, and Italy, Greenbuddies is well-equipped to meet the unique requirements of each country and provide highly efficient, tailored solar solutions.
