A unique agrivoltaic project called Triticum (Latin for "wheat") has been launched in the German village of Oberdorf am Lech, combining the cultivation of agricultural crops with the production of electricity from the sun. The project is being implemented by the Greenbuddies team for German investor MaxSolar and, with a capacity of just under 17 MWp, is currently the largest agrivoltaic power plant of its kind in Germany.

Comprehensive implementation from preparation to construction of the PV power plant

The Greenbuddies team is responsible for the implementation of the project, from preparatory and earthworks, through the installation of structures and panels, electrical installations, to technical supervision, project support, and construction management. Completion of construction is planned for the end of 2025, when the power plant should also become fully operational.

PV panels are installed in a two-row arrangement on 28 hectares of agricultural land, placed on advanced tracker structures that follow the movement of the sun across the sky. This system increases production efficiency by up to 30% compared to static installations. Wheat will be grown under the panels, proving that combining agriculture and energy is not only possible but also highly effective.

The estimated annual production of the Triticum project is 22 GWh of electricity, which corresponds to the consumption of approximately 6,000 households. Tracker technology is proving to be the ideal choice for agrivoltaic projects, as its movable structure allows for even sunlight exposure of crops under the panels while increasing energy yield by up to 30%.

The Greenbuddies team has also implemented a similar agrivoltaic park with a capacity of 5.6 MWp in Sweden near the town of Hova, where wheat and rapeseed are grown under solar panels. The first harvest took place there in 2025.

The boom in agrivoltaics in Europe

Agrivoltaics - the combination of electricity generation and agricultural activities on a single site - is experiencing a significant boom in Europe. Germany, France, and the Netherlands view this technology as a key element of energy transformation and food self-sufficiency. In the Czech Republic, the trend is just beginning to develop.

From 2024, Czech farmers are able to install panels above vineyards, hop fields, and orchards, for example. From November 2025, it should also be possible to place photovoltaics above arable land with vegetables such as cabbage, broccoli, or tomatoes. These changes are brought about by a new decree from the Ministry of Agriculture, which aims to support the wider use of agrivoltaics in the Czech Republic.
