Norway Opens New Opportunities for Solar PV
Norway’s energy mix has historically been dominated by hydropower and wind energy. Solar power has so far represented a relatively small but rapidly growing segment of the market. Norway’s total installed solar capacity currently stands at approximately 876 MWp.
Although utility-scale solar PV plants have so far been rather exceptional in Norway, the situation is beginning to change rapidly. The Norwegian market is entering a new phase of development driven by legislative changes and a growing focus on energy diversification. Increasing the licensing threshold for solar projects from 1 MW to 10 MW has also created new opportunities for larger ground-mounted photovoltaic power plants.
The Kile project developed by Innlandet Fornybar comes at exactly this dynamic stage of the Norwegian PV market’s development. Once completed, it will rank among the largest ground-mounted solar power plants in the country while also becoming Greenbuddies’ first project outside the European Union. The project therefore represents an important milestone not only for the Norwegian solar sector, but also for the company’s further international expansion.
Greenbuddies to Build One of Norway’s Largest Ground-Mounted PV Plants
The new project is being built in cooperation with Differ Energy AS as the EPC partner. The site, Kile, is located in the valley Gudbrandsdalen at 868 meters above sea level and will see quite heavy snow conditions. The location was earlier used as a mink breeding farm that has been decommissioned some years ago. Ground preparations of the 8.5 MWp ground-mounted photovoltaic power plant began in May 2026.
Greenbuddies will install foundations, deliver complete mechanical installation and install PV panels. The project is planned to include 12,766 photovoltaic modules rated at 650 Wp each, 21 inverters rated at 350 kVA each, approximately 5,500 ground screws for the foundations, and a two-post mounting system.
Due to the project’s scale, the still-emerging Norwegian PV market, and its technical solution, Kile will become one of the country’s most significant utility-scale solar projects.
Another Step in Greenbuddies’ International Expansion
The Kile project confirms Greenbuddies’ long-term strategy of expanding into new markets while strengthening its position as an experienced installation partner for large-scale photovoltaic power plants. By entering Norway, the company is also broadening its know-how in delivering solar projects under the specific climatic and geographical conditions of Northern Europe.
