A giant solar park with a capacity exceeding 41.8 MWp is being built in the northern Bohemian village of Modlany. It also includes a battery storage facility with a capacity of almost 42 MWh and an output of 35 MW. This is the largest photovoltaic plant with battery storage currently under construction in the Czech Republic, and Greenbuddies is the EPC contractor for the project.

Construction of the solar power plant began at the end of 2024 on a brownfield site covering approximately 30 hectares, where the largest solar park in the Czech Republic is now being built. It will consist of over 58,300 panels with a nominal output of 720 Wp. Approximately 30,000 piles will be anchored to ensure a robust and stable structure. The first phase of the photovoltaic power plant is scheduled to be commissioned at the end of 2025.

The Greenbuddies team is involved in the comprehensive execution of the project. This includes the preparation of implementation documentation for the supply of technology and its construction and commissioning. The investor of the project is Katemo Group, and the financing partner is Česká spořitelna.

PV as a second chance for brownfield

This project utilises brownfield land from a mining spoil tip. The area, which would otherwise remain unused, is thus given a second chance. Agricultural land is not being built on, and solar panels bring a number of benefits here – from producing clean energy and reducing CO₂ emissions to recultivating and stabilising the area, helping to reduce dust and erosion. This solution supports the principles of sustainable development, where even disadvantaged areas are transformed into a useful source of energy, helping to conserve agricultural land and areas suitable for residential or industrial development.

The trend towards large solar parks and large-capacity battery storage

The Czech Republic is beginning to follow the trend of large ground-mounted solar parks and battery storage facilities, which has been evident abroad for several years.

The largest development of solar parks in Czechia so far was in 2009 and 2010, but since then this market segment has stagnated for 13 years. The year 2023 was a turning point in this regard – according to data from the Solar Association, Czechia is returning to the photovoltaic markets, which grew by approximately 1,000 MW year-on-year. Financial subsidies from the state Modernisation Fund, which aim to significantly accelerate the transition to renewable energy sources, also contributed to this.

The European battery system market has also been booming, especially in the last three years. The Czech Republic joined it only last year, when, according to an analysis by SolarPower Europe, it installed 920 MWh, or approximately 5% of the annual capacity added in Europe, placing the country among the top 5 main markets behind Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom and Austria.
